Slovakia is still deluged; parts of Košice evacuated

News is still flooding in of the seemingly unending rains in Central Europe. In eastern Slovakia road and rail transport links have been cut, gas and electricity supplies affected and crops ruined - but the human impact is much greater.  Thousands of people from hundreds of villages have had to leave their homes. Some 1,500 people had to be evacuated from Košice because of fears that the Hornad would burst its banks. The government has pledged €25mm in aid to help towns and villages recover from what are being called the worst floods in a century.
There are reports of some deaths in Slovakia but it's Poland that has seen the worst death count with a toll of 18. A man was killed in the Czech Republic when his car skidded on a flooded road – aquaplaning is what happens when a car's tyres get on top of a layer of water and the result is often tragedy.
