About Skotslov
"Skotslov" is a combination of the Slovak names of two countries; Skotsko (Scotland) and Slovensko (Slovakia).

Slovakia joined the European Union on May 1st 2004 along with 9 other countries, including of course Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Slovakia has a skilled and well educated workforce many of whom have an interest in getting experience abroad to enhance their career prospects in the enlarged European Union. Since joining the EU, a significant number of Slovaks, and many more Poles, have taken the opportunity to come to Scotland to work.
Scotland has suffered a declining population for many years and therefore welcomes migrant workers. Each of the two countries has very little understanding of the other although they in fact share certain distinct similarities. To name but three:
- both have a population of about 5 million
- both have larger and more prosperous neighbours with which they have many social, economic and sporting ties
- both have a policy of attracting foreign direct investment.
